Jin Tay's OEM process is divided into five stages: DFM design review, mold development, prototyping and validation, testing and certification, and mass production. DFM is the starting point of the entire process, occurring before any mold is cut. The purpose of this stage is not to alter the product's appearance or functional positioning, but to confirm that the existing design can be manufactured consistently. If structural issues are found during the DFM stage, the cost of modification is lowest; if they are only discovered after mold development has begun, both modification costs and schedule delays increase significantly.
Four Key Areas Examined in a DFM Review
Structural and Mechanical Feasibility
Checks the relative positions, clearance, and load paths of internal lock components to ensure the cylinder, springs, and housing do not interfere, and evaluates whether the structural strength can be maintained for long-term use after molding.
Plastic and Metal Part Moldability
Checks wall thickness, draft angles, parting line locations, and wall thickness uniformity to avoid sink marks, warpage, or short shots after injection molding, which are common mass-production defects in lock housings.
Assembly Sequence and Tolerance Stack-Up
Evaluates whether the cumulative tolerances of individual parts still allow for smooth assembly, particularly for the dial mechanism of combination locks, the keyhole position of TSA locks, and the integration of electronic modules with mechanical structures in IoT locks.
Material and Surface Finish Compatibility
Confirms the compatibility of plastic materials with surface treatments such as electroplating, painting, and laser engraving, and checks whether the positions of Bluetooth, NFC, or RFID antennas in IoT products could be shielded by metal housings.
What Buyers Should Prepare for the DFM Stage
Before entering the DFM stage, buyers should ideally provide complete 2D or 3D design drawings, an estimated annual production volume, a description of the usage environment (e.g., travel, gym lockers, industrial electrical cabinets), and any known compliance requirements. The more complete the information provided, the better the DFM report can reflect actual mass-production risks. How DFM Results Affect Subsequent Lead Time and Cost
A complete DFM report typically lists the design items that need modification, the reasons for the changes, and recommended solutions. Buyers can then decide whether to accept the modifications, adjust specifications, or proceed with the original design to the next stage. In general, the cost of modifying a design during the DFM stage is far lower than modifying it after mold development; the former only requires adjusting drawings, while the latter may require re-cutting the mold. Therefore, treating DFM as a step to reduce overall project risk, rather than an additional process, is more helpful for buyers in managing cost and lead time.
